The first DP in Africa was conducted in July 2014 in Bududa and Butaleja districts of Uganda. The topic was how to deal with the environmental disasters and population pressures that challenge life in these vulnerable communities. The ResilientAfrica Network is conducting the first Deliberative Polls in Africa.
In collaboration with our partners at Keio University in Japan, a city-wide Deliberative Poll was conducted in the city of Sapporo, Japan. The Deliberative Polling® event focused on the important issue of snow removal and snow management in the city. Annually, the city of Sapporo experiences one of the highest snowfalls in the world, as such the city faces tough decisions of how to manage snow efficiently and effectively for the safety and livelihood of its residents.
For the first time, the central government introduced Deliberative Polling® to better reflect public opinion in compiling basic policies for nuclear power and other energy sources. The public opinions expressed will be used in deciding basic energy policies.
The first Deliberative Polling® event held in Macao was on the subject of the Press Law and the Visual-audio Broadcasting Act.
A poll was held at Hokkaido University on the subject of on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) - "Mad Cow Disease".
On Saturday August 11, 2011, a stratified random sample of 193 residents of Seoul and its surrounding metropolitan area gathered together in a large assembly hall of a regional training facility in the outskirts of Seoul. They were gathered to discuss various aspects of the Korean unification issue – the conditions, timing, and consequences of reunifying the two Koreas – and were prepared to tackle the issue for the rest of the weekend.
On June 24, 2011, a scientifically selected random sample of 412 registered voters from throughout the state participated in California’s first ever statewide Deliberative Poll on governance reform, in Torrance, CA. The turnout for the “What’s Next California?” Poll was unprecedented in the 17 year history of Deliberative Polling® and the participants came prepared and eager to share their views and engage with fellow Californians in discussions about how our state is governed.
To date, our collaborators in Hong Kong have not conducted a full-scale Deliberative Poll in the special administrative region. However, the CDD continues to work with Robert Chung, the director of POP at HKU on pilot projects and trainings.
A Deliberative Poll on was held at Keio University on May 28 and 29, 2011 in Mita, Tokyo. The main theme was "Pension System, A Generational Choice."
The results of the deliberative poll, and the reactions of Michigan residents to issues such as poverty, education, unemployment, housing and the economy aired on public TV stations in Michigan on Jan. 18. Questions were formulated with the input of Michigan-based public policy experts.
